Character Background and Description
Jess Vannar grew up during a time of great military conflict for Phanes. The constant fighting and seeing her mother wounded in a raider incursion that managed to breach the wall led to Jess becoming worn out by violence. Unwilling to join the military like many other Barren, Jess decided that the best way serve the ones she loves who go up onto the wall is to make sure that they are safe. Jess worked first as a leather tanner, and then as an armorer; cutting weaving and sewing the various protective garments that keep farmer and soldier alike from getting hurt too badly by the dangerous outside world.
She lives in a small apartment in the larger housing projects on the west side near the north border of the Phanes Wall. Among her few possessions are a few heirloom tomato seed packets that hopes to someday be able to grow despite Phanes Bay’s cold climate and rocky soil. She received them from her mother who had received them from her grandmother who had purchased it before the great war when all humans were fertile.
Jess moved out of her family’s house when she was found out to be Barren and moved into an apartment with several of the other Barren friends she had made in school. When they joined the Barren Legion, she found herself alone for the first time. After getting a job at the Tannery she made fast friends with other workers and now occasionally goes out to the Red Light District with her friends during Inannan Festival days.
